The Northam Swan Guardians is a community conservation group local to Northam in Western Australia. It focuses on protecting the mute swan population on the Avon River; the only place in Australia where you will see mute swans living in the wild.

Our ‘Swan Enclosure Project’ is a monthly volunteer activity, lead by the Shire of Northam. Members who register as Shire ‘Swan Guardian’ volunteer are granted permission to enter the enclosure to carry out landscaping, tree planting, rubbish collection during our arranged monthly event.

Our ‘Swan Social Program’ is about bringing the Facebook page followers together in person once a month to socialize and chat all things mute swans or Avon River. It promotes positive social interaction for good mental health by providing an inclusive, respectful and supportive environment.

Our ‘Cygnets Program’ is designed to engage with children 5 years and over and educate them about the welfare mute swans. Our arts and crafts activities are free and interactive. The activities are held at the local library during the school holidays and run by the Swan Guardian Shire Volunteers.

Our ‘Community Engagement Program’ is where the Swan Guardians link up with other local community groups, clubs, associations or local businesses to create events, projects or activities that align with conserving, protecting and educating the general public about the mute swans.

We actively engage with the Shire of Northam and it’s Rangers Service, attend local council meetings and communicate with State Government members of parliament for the conservation of the mute swans and advancement of the local environment.
